Most articles about airport internships talk about benefits and certifications. This one covers what you will actually do — hour by hour, day by day — so you know exactly what you are signing up for.
First Things First: Shift-Based Work
Airports operate 24 hours a day. As an intern, you will work shift-based hours — typically on one of two rotations:
- Morning shift: 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- Evening shift: 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Night shifts are typically not assigned to interns. Your shift roster is usually handed out a week in advance by your supervisor. Plan your personal schedule and commute around this.
Week 1 — Induction and Observation
Your first week is almost entirely induction. Expect:
- Airport security clearance briefing (your ID will be processed for airside access)
- Tour of the terminal — departure, arrival, lounges, back-of-house areas
- Uniform fitting and grooming standards briefing (these are strictly enforced)
- Introduction to your team and senior staff
- Shadowing — you watch, you do not yet lead passenger interactions
Do not underestimate induction week. It sets the tone. Senior staff and supervisors notice who pays attention and who is on their phone.
A Typical Morning Shift — Day by Day
5:30 AM — Leave Home
With a 6 AM shift, you are waking up by 4:30–5:00 AM depending on your commute. Airports are rarely close to city centres. This is the single biggest adjustment most interns underestimate.
5:55 AM — Sign In, Grooming Check
Most airport hospitality programmes have a pre-shift grooming check. Your uniform must be pressed, shoes polished, hair tied or neatly styled, minimal jewellery. This is not optional — it is checked every single shift.
6:00 AM — Briefing
Your supervisor briefs the team on the day's flight schedule, expected VIP passengers, any special assistance requirements, and team assignments. As an intern, you are assigned to shadow or assist a senior staff member.
6:30 AM — First Flights Arrive
Early morning is the busiest window at most airports — domestic routes from metros start arriving. Depending on your role, you may be:
- Welcoming passengers at the arrival gate
- Assisting elderly or differently-abled passengers with wheelchairs and transfers
- Directing passengers to immigration, baggage claim, or connecting gates
- Managing the hospitality lounge — refreshments, seating, queue management
9:00 AM — Peak Hours
This is when the real work happens. Multiple flights arriving and departing simultaneously. Long queues, missed connections, confused passengers, families with young children. You learn to stay calm and solve problems under pressure — a skill no classroom teaches.
12:00 PM — Handover Preparation
Towards the end of your shift, you brief the incoming team on pending tasks, unresolved passenger issues, and any operational notes. Good handovers are a professional habit that employers notice.
2:00 PM — Shift Ends
Sign out, head home. Many interns use the evening for DGCA exam preparation or language courses — especially those targeting permanent roles in international airports.
