Before you apply for an airport internship, you deserve a straight answer about money. This guide covers how airport internship stipends work in India in 2026 — without the vague language or unrealistic promises.
First, Understand the Two-Layer Structure
Airport internship earnings in India typically come from two sources — and it is important to understand both separately:
- Government stipend — from the PM Internship Scheme (where eligible)
- Employer stipend — from the host airport organisation (where agreed in MOU/Offer Letter)
These are independent of each other. One does not replace the other. Not every intern receives both — eligibility for the government scheme is specific (see our PM Internship Scheme guide), and the employer stipend depends on the terms of your specific placement.
The Government Scheme Component
Under the PM Internship Scheme 2024, eligible interns receive:
- ₹5,000 per month — paid directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account by the Government of India
- ₹6,000 one-time joining allowance — for incidental expenses on commencement
This is government support — not a salary, not a guarantee. It is available only to eligible candidates (age 21–24, household income below ₹8 lakh, not currently in full-time education or employment). If you are in the final year of your BBA Aviation and still enrolled, you may not be eligible until after graduation.
The Employer Stipend Component
Whether your host airport organisation pays an additional stipend depends entirely on the MOU or Airport Partner Agreement between the host organisation and EWS. The amount, timing, and payment method are all as specified in your individual Offer Letter.
Key point: The stipend is never guaranteed by InternAVIA. It is a commitment from the host organisation, and EWS enforces this commitment contractually. If the host organisation has agreed to pay a stipend in the MOU, they are legally obligated to do so — and InternAVIA's Terms & Conditions include explicit enforcement provisions.
What Actually Hits Your Account Each Month
For an eligible intern in an MOU-covered placement with an employer stipend agreed:
- Government (PM Scheme): credited directly to bank via DBT
- Employer stipend: credited by the host organisation by the last working day of the month
For an intern who is not PM Scheme eligible (e.g., still enrolled in full-time university programme):
- Only the employer stipend applies (as per Offer Letter terms)
Deductions and Tax
Airport internship stipends are generally not treated as "salary" for income tax purposes in India, but this depends on the total amount received in the financial year. If your total income (including the stipend) is below the basic exemption limit (currently ₹3 lakh), no tax applies. Consult a CA if you are unsure about your personal situation.
The PM Internship Scheme government payment is a DBT transfer and is not subject to TDS at source.
Cost of Living During the Internship
Honest reality check: airport internships are almost always on-site at the airport, which is rarely in the centre of the city. Factor in commute costs carefully. For students from outside the city, accommodation near the airport or on a convenient transport route is a significant expense.
Common monthly costs for an airport intern in a metro city:
- Accommodation (shared): ₹4,000–₹8,000/month depending on city
- Daily commute: ₹1,500–₹3,000/month
- Food: ₹3,000–₹5,000/month
Plan your finances before you start. An internship is a career investment — approach it as one.
What Internship Stipend Is Not
- It is not a salary — you are not an employee
- It is not guaranteed to continue beyond the probation period if performance is unsatisfactory
- It is not a promise of a job offer at the end
- It cannot be withheld arbitrarily — this is the host organisation's contractual obligation
Is It Worth It Financially?
In pure financial terms, the stipend is supplementary income — not a living wage, especially in metros. The real return on an airport internship is the verifiable experience, the performance rating on your InternAVIA profile, and the employer network you build. Students with strong internship ratings consistently secure permanent airport roles at significantly higher packages than those without.
Think of the internship stipend as the government and your host organisation covering part of your cost of living while you build a credential that will pay back many times over in your first permanent role.
