Wheelchair / Special Assistance — FAQs

What is special handling at an airport?+

Special handling covers assistance for passengers who need support beyond the standard journey — wheelchair users and passengers with reduced mobility, travellers with visual, hearing or cognitive impairment, unaccompanied minors, expectant mothers and passengers travelling with medical equipment.

What rules govern wheelchair assistance at Indian airports?+

DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements, Section 3, Series M, Part I sets out the carriage of persons with disability or reduced mobility in India, including what assistance a passenger is entitled to. Special handling staff are how an airport actually delivers that entitlement day to day.

What qualifications do I need for a special handling job?+

Most roles are open to 10th or 12th-pass candidates and freshers are trained on the job. You will need an Airport Entry Permit after police verification, BCAS-approved AVSEC awareness training, and disability-assistance training; ambulift certification is added where the station requires it.

Is special handling physically demanding?+

Yes. It involves lifting, pushing wheelchairs over distance, and physically supporting passengers during boarding and disembarkation, across a full rotational shift. Physical fitness is a genuine requirement rather than a formality.

Can freshers apply for special assistance roles?+

Yes, and many do — it is one of the clearest entry routes into airport ground operations. Joining the InternAVIA Placement Desk bench lets our team consider you as requirements open at the airports you choose.
